In July 2023, the China Electronics Standardization Institute and the China Energy Storage Alliance convened the Second Sodium-ion Battery Industry Chain and Standard Development Forum. During the forum, the 2023 Sodium-ion Battery Industry Research Report and the list of the first batch of units passing sodium-ion battery evaluation were released.
Following the forum, the organizers received numerous inquiries regarding sodium-ion battery evaluations. In order to better support government initiatives and promote the healthy and rational development of the industry, the China Electronics Standardization Institute continued to conduct sodium-ion battery evaluations with support from the "Key Laboratory of Green Battery Evaluation Analysis of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology", the "National Green Battery Quality Inspection and Testing Center", and the "CESI Laboratory". The evaluation, based on the group standard T/CNESA 1006-2021 "General specification for sodium-ion secondary batteries" issued by the China Energy Storage Alliance, focused on safety and performance aspects.
On September 11, 2023, the certificate award ceremony for "Second Batch of Units Passing Sodium-ion Battery Evaluation" was held in Beijing. The announcement of the second batch of units passing sodium-ion battery evaluation (a total of 8 units) during the meeting serves as an important reference for policymakers, financial investors, customer application enterprises, media, and the general public, holding significant significance.
Meanwhile, the Lithium-ion Battery and Similar Product Standards Working Group of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will continue to advance the development of national/industry standards for sodium-ion batteries, as well as pre-research on the standard system for sodium-ion batteries. Currently, more than ten sodium-ion battery standards are being formulated or planned, with discussions on some standards already held during the Second Sodium-ion Battery Industry Chain and Standard Development Forum.
Furthermore, to advance the achievement of carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, promote the development of the energy electronics industry, accelerate the integration and innovation of solar photovoltaics, new energy storage products, key terminal applications, and critical information technologies (solar-storage-terminal-information), and implement the Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Development of the Energy Electronics Industry issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and five other departments (No. 181 [2022] of the Ministry of Industry and Information), the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has relied on the Lithium-ion Battery and Similar Product Standards Working Group to gradually initiate standardization work related to sodium-ion batteries. In order to implement the spirit of relevant documents from the competent authorities and meet the needs of industry development, the Lithium-ion Battery and Similar Product Standards Working Group of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology plans to hold the third "Sodium-ion Battery Industry Chain and Standard Development Forum" in the first half of 2024. The forum will be jointly organized by the China Electronics Standardization Institute (Secretariat of the Battery Working Group) and the China Energy Storage Alliance, and will be attended by enterprises and institutions along the sodium-ion battery industry chain.
